HOME OWNERSHIP
Looking for an affordable home?

We may be able to help.

Are you in need of safe, affordable housing?

  • Do you have problems with the heating system, plumbing, electrical, building structure or other health or safety issues in your current home?

  • Do you have insufficient bedrooms to meet your family’s needs?

  • Do you live in an unsafe or unsanitary area?

  • Have you lived or worked in the Marion or Taylor County area for at least one year?

  • Are you unable to get a loan to purchase a home?

If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, you may be a candidate for a Habitat for Humanity home!

Eligibility:  People who partner with Marion County Habitat for Humanity must qualify based on a few different categories:
  • Must live or work in Marion or Taylor County for at least a year before final acceptance into the program. We only build in Marion County.

  • Need: Must live in substandard housing. This can include that your house/apartment is:

    • Physically falling apart

    • In an unsafe neighborhood

    • Over crowded

    • Occupied by more than one family

    • Your total housing cost is over 60% of your pre-tax income (This includes your mortgage/rent payment and utilities such as gas, electric and water. It does not include cable, phone or any other utility).

  • Ability to pay: Habitat homeowners pay for the cost of the land and materials that go into their home. They must fall within a certain income range for their family size as indicated by the table below.  They also must be able to show:

    • Stable income for at least one year

    • A history of paying rent, utilities, and other bills on time

    • No bankruptcy or foreclosure within the past year

    • Willingness to pay off any outstanding judgments and/or liens

In determining your ability to pay we will run a credit history. If you have concerns about your credit history please talk to us before deciding this program is not right for you.

  • Willingness to partner: This includes the ability to embrace a Habitat partnership by supporting and understanding our mission by following our policies, attending classes such as budgeting and homeownership, and committing to 400 hours of “sweat equity” or helping to build Habitat houses. We will work with anyone who is physically unable to be on the worksite by providing other “sweat equity” options.
